Detroit’s Youth Talent Shines at DPSCD’s “An Evening of Fine Arts

Detroit’s vibrant arts community came alive on Thursday, May 18, as over 500 middle and high school fine and performing arts students showcased their extraordinary talent at the illustrious Fox Theatre. The Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) presented its highly anticipated event, “An Evening of Fine Arts,” where students fascinated the audience with their exceptional performances.

Attendees were treated to a captivating display of DPSCD’s top instrumental music ensembles, vocal music ensembles, dance companies, and excerpts from the district’s theater productions. The Fox Theatre’s Grand Lobby was adorned with original works of art, showcasing the immense talent of the district’s top visual artists. This annual celebration recognizes the students’ remarkable achievements and provides them with a unique opportunity to perform on the same stage that has hosted the world’s greatest artists. Marking its 54th anniversary this year, this signature event was the kickoff to DPSCD’s “Come Home” Alumni Hall of Fame Weekend.

“An Evening of Fine Arts” welcomed the public with free admission, and the venue was filled to capacity. Students dedicated months of preparation to present their songs, dances, and artwork, demonstrating the city’s abundance of emerging stars. The room resonated with support and applause from family, friends, and alumni. The exceptional abilities displayed by these students exemplified the unwavering commitment, ambition, and talent fostered within DPSCD schools throughout the city.

Arts education plays a vital role in empowering students and amplifying their voices within a district. It offers unique opportunities for self-expression, creativity, and personal growth. Engaging in artistic activities helps students develop self-confidence and self-esteem. As they experiment, create, and showcase their work, they gain a sense of accomplishment and pride in their abilities. This confidence extends beyond the arts and can positively impact other areas of their lives, such as academics and personal relationships.

DPSCD Deputy Executive Director, Andrew McGuire, stressed the significance of the event and its role in cultivating creativity and expanding reach. He highlighted how the event served as a catalyst for nurturing artistic expression and fostering the growth of creative abilities among students.

“The work that’s happening in all of our arts classrooms is intended to bring out and elevate the voice of the student. Having the access and opportunity to share that work beyond just the school community and into the city life community and having that theater also happen to be a national gem, is beyond exceptional.”

The triumphant return of “An Evening of Fine Arts” to the Fox Theatre was made possible through the generous support of various partners, including Comerica Bank, 313 Presents, Olympia Development, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, and Detroit ACE. This united philanthropic effort created a profound impact and inspired thousands of Detroiters to gather and celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of the students.

The Ilitch Companies have been long-standing supporters of Detroit Public Schools students, fostering a partnership that spans financial and in-kind donations, internships, and educational programs. For the Ilitch family, “An Evening of Fine Arts” is a natural extension of this commitment, providing a platform to showcase the incredible talents nurtured within the district.

Steve Davis, Comerica Bank Michigan Market President, recognized the event as “a beautiful community celebration of the students’ extraordinary talents and artistic gifts.” He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to collaborate with partners such as 313 Presents, Ilitch Companies, and the City of Detroit to offer this exceptional stage, connecting the community to one of the most rewarding events of the year.

Howard Handler, President of 313 Presents, echoed the sentiment of supporting the event, emphasizing his pride in continuing 313 Presents’ support of DPSCD’s “An Evening of Fine Arts,” recognizing the event’s ability to uplift and celebrate the passion and potential of young people.

“An Evening of Fine Arts” was just the opening for an eventful weekend intended to celebrate the progress and successes of DPSCD programs and students. The weekend includes a range of events designed to engage Detroiters of all ages. A special Alumni “Meet & Greet” Reception at the Motown Museum on Friday, May 19, provides an opportunity for alumni to reconnect and reminisce. The highlight of the weekend is the Come Home Alumni Hall of Fame Gala on May 20. This prestigious event recognizes the outstanding achievements of numerous DPS and DPSCD alumni while also shining a spotlight on the programs and initiatives benefiting current DPSCD students. Tickets for the gala can be purchased at detroitk12.org/alumnigala.
