Detroiters Encouraged to Register to Vote on National Voter Registration Day

Detroit Votes 2020 encourages Detroiters to register to vote as part of National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 22.

“Participating in elections has never been easier,” said Conrad Mallett, Jr., Deputy Mayor of Detroit. “By registering to vote and casting a ballot, Detroiters can ensure their voice is heard in local and state elections and in the Presidential race.”

“The Clerk’s Office invites more Detroiters to participate in this election,” said Clerk Janice Winfrey. “We will be offering options for safe and secure voting, as we expect and hope that turn out will be high.”

While Detroit Votes 2020 encourages early registration, eligible voters in Michigan can register through Election Day, November 3. To do so, or to check that voter registration is up to date and accurate, visit www.mi.gov/vote. Eligible voters must be a citizen of the United States, 18 years old by the next election, a resident of Michigan and at least a 30-day resident of a city or township by election day, and not confined in a jail or prison after being convicted and sentenced. While registering, eligible voters must show proof of residence, which can be done digitally. Acceptable documents include:

  • Michigan driver’s license or state ID card
  • Current utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck or government check
  • Other government document

After registering, voters can choose whether to cast a ballot at home or at precinct locations. Voting early can help minimize the spread of COVID-19 and reduce strain on workers and lines on Election Day. In addition to Election Day polling locations, additional options will be available to Detroiters including satellite voting centers, secure ballot drop boxes and drive-through secure voting events. More information will be available in the coming weeks.

National Voter Registration Day is observed annually on the fourth Tuesday of September. It is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating democracy, and aims to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities throughout the U.S.
