Detroit Youth Choir will be honored at Campus Martius Friday

Tonight, the Detroit Youth Choir (DYC) will find out if they are the grand prize winners of $1 million on “America’s Got Talent” at the finale results show. And whether they win or not, the entire City of Detroit is proud of how far they have gone and will honor them at a homecoming celebration Friday, September 20 at Campus Martius Park at 4 p.m.

The event is in partnership with the City of Detroit, the Downtown Detroit Partnership, and WDIV-Local 4, whose Kimberly Gil has provided onsite coverage of DYC in Los Angeles.

The choir’s 52 students are scheduled to be at the event, along with their music director, Anthony T. White. The DYC is part of the non-profit Detroit Youth Concert Choir & Performing Arts Company, which helps young people ages 8 to 18, discover and perform music, theatre and dance.

“First of all, I want to say thank you to Detroit for being our support system while we’re out here,” said White. “Who would have ever thought a small choir would be where dreams are made?”

This special event is free and open to the public and will be hosted by Gil. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Downtown Detroit Partnership CEO Eric Larson, Detroit Public Schools Community District Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti, and WDIV-Local 4 Vice President and General Manager Marla Drutz will join the community in welcoming home the Detroit Youth Choir.

The choir performed on the finale on the hit NBC reality competition Tuesday night. Their rendition of “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, the same song they performed during their audition, drew emotional high praise from all four judges. Results from America’s vote will be announced during tonight’s two-hour season finale at 8:00 p.m. Voting closed at 7:00 this morning.
