Back in the mid-1980s, Regina DuBose was a single mother with a dream inspired by the light-up purple roses that she was selling at Prince concerts.
A guidance counselor at the time, she recognized an untapped market in Detroit for a novelty store that could provide t-shirts, party supplies, and other fun novelties. So she opened The Alexis Company 35 years ago this week, at the busy corner of Gratiot Avenue and Russell Street across from Detroit’s bustling Eastern Market.
Now Regina DuBose is celebrating this tremendous milestone by authoring two books that share her success secrets. One book is about business; the other book is about how faith formed her foundation to persevere as a divorcée and female entrepreneur starting in 1986.
PERPETUATING WEALTH: Secrets to Longevity in Small Business and
GETTING STARTED WITH JESUS: The Process for Spiritual Growth and Maturity are now available for pre-order in hardcover and paperback from Two Sisters Writing & Publishing.
The books, including the eBooks, will be released in bookstores and on global retail sites in time for a gala celebration at the Detroit Historical Museum on Saturday, October 23, 2021.
“I learned so much as a small business owner,” says DuBose, whose shop became a favored supplier for Detroit’s mayoral candidates and judges during the 1980s, 1990s and beyond. “These books are my way of saying, ‘Thank you, Detroit, and thank you to all the wonderful people who supported The Alexis Company through the years. Our motto is, ‘Where the fun begins…’ and we’re continuing that tradition with my books and the launch party.”
DuBose says she wrote PERPETUATING WEALTH: Secrets to Longevity in Small Business to help entrepreneurs plan and persevere through the many challenges relating to marketing, finance, customer service, and unexpected problems. She documents the history, progress, and success of The Alexis Company, and explains how her formula of prayer, patience, planning, and passion expanded her capacity to grow, prosper, and serve as a positive influence on the Metro Detroit community
Likewise, GETTING STARTED WITH JESUS: The Process for Spiritual Growth and Maturity chronicles how a strong Christian faith empowered her through the difficulties of divorce, single parenthood, and the struggles of owning and operating a small business.
Right now, DuBose is speaking about the powerful messages in her books in media interviews and on podcasts.
“My messages are neatly wrapped inside my books,” DuBose says. “This is the last time to live your best life, so we should live life well, and I hope my books can help you do that.”
