The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is undergoing additional repairs as part of its $22 million renovation project. The tunnel will close on March 5, March 12, March 19, March 26, April 16, April 23 and April 30 between the hours of 9 PM and 5 AM. Renovations on the tunnel began in 2017 and included repairs on the concrete ceiling, electrical work, and general maintenance. All repairs will help the tunnel continue to operate in peak condition, serving 12,000 daily and 4 million annual customers.
“The project was designed to extend the life of the tunnel, a critical resource of commerce between two nations, connecting the greater Detroit and Windsor areas,” said Neal Belitsky, Detroit-Windsor Tunnel president.
“Our goal has always been to minimize disruptions as much as possible while keeping travelers safe,” Belitsky said. “Limiting tunnel closures to off-hours during this important renovation work has helped us do that, and we greatly appreciate the patience and understanding of our nighttime customers.”
Renovations to the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel are co-funded by Detroit-Windsor Tunnel LLC and Windsor-Detroit Borderlink Limited. The tunnel has operated under American Roads, a Detroit-based company since 1998. The lease agreement for the tunnel will run through 2048. $65 million has gone into the sprawling infrastructure, including renovations in 2015.
