Detroit Water and Sewer Departments Partner with Belle Isle Nature Center for Free Back-to-School Event

On Sunday, August 18, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Detroit families will have a chance to gear up for the new school year at the Belle Isle Nature Center, located at 176 Lakeside Drive. The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) is teaming up with the Nature Center to host a back-to-school reading event aimed at providing students with the resources they need to start the year off strong. The event promises free bookbags, school supplies, and a full afternoon of activities—all at no cost to attendees.

This family-friendly event will feature live book readings, where children can enjoy hearing stories in small, intimate groups. Each child will also walk away with the book that was read, packed into one of the 300 bookbags filled with pencils, stickers, and other essentials needed for school. The event is designed to ensure that children in the community have the tools they need to succeed, starting with a love for reading.

Beyond the excitement for the kids, parents and guardians will have access to valuable resources provided by DWSD. Informational workshops will offer water-saving tips, plumbing advice, and answers to common household questions. This event isn’t just about getting ready for school—it’s also an opportunity for families to gain knowledge and tools to make their homes more efficient and save money in the long run.

The partnership between DWSD and Belle Isle Nature Center reflects a broader commitment to the Detroit community. By hosting this event, both organizations are showing their dedication to supporting education and wellness for local families. It’s an important reminder that community support can come from unexpected places—like the city’s water department. DWSD’s involvement illustrates how city services can engage with residents in ways that go beyond infrastructure, offering meaningful contributions to daily life.

While the event is free and open to the public, those driving onto Belle Isle should be aware that a $13 Recreation Passport is required for vehicle access to the island. Once on Belle Isle, families can enjoy not only the event but the natural beauty and exhibits of the Belle Isle Nature Center as well.

This back-to-school event underscores the importance of community collaboration in supporting our city’s children. It’s more than just bookbags and school supplies—it’s about ensuring that families have the resources they need to thrive. So, come out on August 18, and take advantage of this opportunity to prepare for the school year while connecting with valuable community services.
