Detroit to Donate 500 Former Government Computers to Detroit Families

The City of Detroit will deliver computers Wednesday morning to human-I-T for distribution to Detroit families lacking access to technology as one of several strategies to reduce Detroit’s digital divide.

The first pallets of donated computers will be delivered today to human-I-T, which assessed and reconditioned or recycled them.

Since establishing its operation in Detroit two years ago, human-I-T has provided technology and internet connectivity to thousands of Detroit families.  The donation is just one of the strategies the City and its partners are employing to close the digital divide in Detroit.

Information also will be provided to let Detroiters lacking technology know how to access refurbished computers, affordable high-speed internet service, tech support, and digital literacy training, as well as how anyone can donate their own computer for this program.

The event is 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 10 at human-I-T, located inside Focus:Hope at 1400 Oakman in Detroit.

Featured participants include Joshua Edmonds, director of Digital Inclusion for the City of Detroit; Jennifer Jambor, sr. program manager, human-I-T; a Detroit resident (one of several) hired by human-I-T to refurbish donated computers; and a Detroit resident who has benefitted from a donated computer.
