DETROIT — The Tigers were greeted with a mix of clouds and temps in the low 50s. The team and fans alike enter the unpredictably of the weather outlook early in the home season as previous Opening Day games were met with snow in the forecast.
Downtown streets felt close to normal and back to a festive fun fare back to the pre-COVID days as tailgaters hit are parking lots.
Tigers opened the game with opening pitches by former Detroit Lions receiver Kelvin Johnson and former Pistons Ben Wallace. The game began with the Tigers taking an open lead against in the lead against the Boston Red Sox .
Tigers Jake Rogers homers (2) on a fly ball to left center field. Jonathan Schoop scored.
In his farewell season Miguel Cabrera singled on a line drive to center fielder Adam Duvall. Spencer Torkelson scored. Eric Haase to 2nd.
Boston would take the lead 6-3 after Adam Duvall homers (3) on a fly ball to center field. Rafael Devers scores followed by Masataka Yoshida scoring at the top 6th inning.
The game would game become static as the Tigers couldn’t manage to edge out any additional points on the board.
The two hour and 32 minute game would close out with Tigers losing to the Red Sox, 6-3.
The COVID-19 pandemic limited fans from Comerica Park for the two years but, new relaxed guidelines drew an expected 40,000 attendees to the ballpark, last year to see the Tigers face-off against the Chicago White Sox on Opening Day.
The home-opening for Detroit’s MLB team is like a holiday for game attendees and for people without a ticket to the game, because the downtown tailgating is almost like having the next best seat.
The area surrounding the stadium was jumping once again with tents stood-up in parking lots to welcome fans for food, games, and big TV monitors for all the game-day action.
Opening game day is also good for street-side business from apparel to a good tasty hot dog.
Inside Comerica Park, thousands of fans filled the seats, long lines at concession stands brought a renewed sense of joy for fans.
