On May 2, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and over 40 community partners in the music, culture, advocacy, and education sectors will co-create a music education impact event at Greater Grace Temple. This event will reinforce the DSO’s commitment to providing instruments and music education to Detroit students through its Detroit Harmony program. The program will celebrate Detroit’s musical heritage with performances by jazz musicians, a DSO chamber ensemble, and a techno artist. Students from five K-8 Detroit schools, including David Ellis Academy, David Ellis Academy West, and Detroit Service Learning Academy, will attend the event, participate in breakout sessions to learn about summer programs and music education resources, and engage in group experiences where they can try out various instruments.
The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Greater Grace Temple and is exclusively open to students from participating schools. However, media can attend when arranged in advance.
The Detroit Harmony program is a collaborative effort between the DSO, schools, arts nonprofits, community organizations, and city leaders to enhance music education opportunities for every child in Detroit. The program aims to support instrument technicians, music educators, and teaching artists to develop a thriving musical community in Detroit. Detroit Harmony has collected over 2,500 instruments through donations for refurbishment and distribution to Detroit students. Damien Crutcher, Managing Director of Detroit Harmony, expressed excitement about providing thousands of Detroit students with musical instruments donated by Michiganders and the opportunity to connect them to training programs and resources in the DSO and partner organizations across Metro Detroit.
