This Friday, June 2, the Detroit Right to Counsel Coalition (DRTC) and other DRTC members will host their first poetry slam, “Slam Evictions,” to inform the community, especially the youth, about Detroit’s eviction crisis and the Right to Counsel ordinance. The event will take place on Friday, June 2 at 4PM at St. John St. Luke Church in Detroit.
“Slam Evictions” will feature writer/event curator/educator Joel Fluent Greene, the recipient of the Spirit of Detroit Award and the Kresge Arts in Detroit Gilda Award, and other poets and visual artists.
The free event includes a $2 Bill giveaway—which is limited to first 50 guests–raffles, food, and beverages.
The DRTC is an advocacy group started in 2019. It is made up of 21 local community organizations, lawyers, Detroiters, community advocates and faith-based organizations who believe housing is a human right. They are working together to get the Detroit Right to Counsel Ordinance fully funded after it was unanimously passed by Detroit City Council in May 2022 to support a right to legal counsel for low-income people facing eviction in the City of Detroit.
The poetry slam is sponsored by the Detroit Right to Counsel Coalition, Wisdom Institute, Detroit Action and the Congress of Communities.
