Detroit Red Wings Host Detroit Block Party to Celebrate Entertainment District Groundbreaking

Detroit-EntertainmentThere have been several celebrations in the metro Detroit area over the past few weeks. Just recently, the re-opening of the I-98 freeway this past Sunday. To add to the list of celebrations, this Thursday Olympia Entertainment and the Detroit Red Wings will host a District Detroit Block Party, Thursday, September 25 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the intersection of Woodward Ave., and Sibley St., in Detroit.

The block party will follow the ceremonial ground-breaking scheduled for 1:30 p.m. which will included the Ilitch companies and their public partners to share their vision for the Detroit Sports and Entertainment District. Noted guest will included:

  • Rick Snyder, Governor, State of Michigan
  •  Mike Duggan, Mayor, City of Detroit
  • George Cushingberry, Jr., President Pro-Tempore, Detroit City Council
  • Christopher Ilitch, President and CEO, Ilitch Holdings

The free, family-friendly event will feature Detroit Red Wings Experience games, including a bounce house and several inflatable interactive games to give fans the opportunity to test their hockey skills. Those in attendance can also enjoy Detroit-area food trucks and live music from local artists (Dan Rafferty Band 6:00-7:30pm and Larry Lee and Back In The Day Band 7:30 – 9:00 pm).

The fun doesn’t stop on Thursday, the community will have the opportunity to skate on the official Red Wings synthetic ice rink at the future site of the new arena from Saturday, Sept. 27Sunday, Oct. 5.

Skating on the synthetic ice is free to the public and complimentary skate rentals will be provided.  Detroit Red Wings Experience games will also be set up on-site for fans to enjoy. The synthetic ice will be available from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on weekends.
