In partnership with the Parade Company, DPSCD celebrated our MHSAA Division 1 and 2 Champions with a world-class parade on Monday, December 5 at 1:30 p.m. Supporters joined us in their spirit team wear as we marched down Woodward with the winning teams, school marching bands and Interim Superintendent Meriweather along with “Mason” from the Mason in the Morning Show on 105.9 KISS.
The parade began at Grand Circus Park at 1:30 p.m. and the march down Woodward culminated in a rally at 2:15 p.m. in front of the Spirit of Detroit in celebration of the Championship teams, Athletic Director Alvin Ward, Cass Tech’s Coach Wilcher and King’s Coach Spencer, along with proud DPSCD staff and students.
Cass Technical High School and Martin Luther King, Jr. Sr. High School’s football teams won dual State Championships capturing the MHSAA Division 1 and Division 2 titles. This is the first time in state history that Division 1 and 2 winners hail from the same school district. In recognition of this historical event, DPSCD, in partnership with the Parade Company will celebrate these unprecedented wins with a parade.
The march featured especially designed “pillar” floats highlighting the district’s new academic plan and the five pillars – Literacy, Career Pathways, Innovation, Family and Community and Wrap-around Services.
All staff were invited to wear team colors Monday to support our champions – Cass (Green and White); King (Black and Gold) – or a combination of the colors.
