Detroit Police Chief James Craig confirms a Detroit police vehicle killed an unidentified bicyclist Wednesday night after being involved in a collision.
The chief said, the accident occurred while a Detroit police officer and his partner were on their way to a call to assistance a Highland Park police officer.
According to reports, the lights and siren was engaged as the squad car crossed through a green traffic light. At that time, the bicyclist, who was crossing against a red light, was struck by the squad car and was killed.
The incident occurred on Oakland Avenue in Highland Park.
The black box, Chief Craig said has been provided to Michigan State Poluce for their analysis. The box tracks driving behaviors like speed and braking.
Detroit Police Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt, said DPD handles police dispatch for the city of Highland Park and at times DPD is dispatched to calls.
The victim and officers involved haven’t been identified.
The Detroit Police Department is now conducting its own internal investigation.
