Detroit Police Chief James Craig left his post with the Police Department and retired today, Fox 2 News reported.
The information came from a source near the 64-year-old chief, WXYZ confirmed. A news conference is scheduled for today, according to reports.
The announcement comes on the heels of reported rumors traveling about that Craig could might run for the gubernatorial race as a potential challenger to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, according to the story.
Sources state that some potential replacements to Craig’s position include:
Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren, who spent 21 years with Detroit police and was a deputy chief for the department before the Southfield chief position.
Former Detroit Police Assistant Chief James White might also be on tap. He now heads up the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.
Detroit Police First Assistant Chief Lashinda Stair.
Detroit Fire Commissioner Eric Jones might also be considered.
Present Deputy Chief Todd Bettison could also be a candidate.
