Detroit Pistons to sign former Michigan guard Derrick Walton Jr., per report

The efforts by the Detroit Pistons to retool their roster while giving opportunities to younger talent is still on-going. On Thursday afternoon, the organization made a move to give a familiar face a chance to partake in that process.

Per a report from Sham Charania of The Athletic, the Pistons plan to sign guard Derrick Walton Jr. to a 10-Day contract.

For Walton, signing with Detroit is a homecoming.

Walton, who was born and raised in Detroit, attended and played high school basketball at Chandler Park Academy in Harper Woods. In addition to that, he played college basketball at the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, Walton earned Second and Third Team All-Big Ten honors. Also while at Michigan, he won the Big Ten Tournament MVP award in 2017.

While Walton went undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft, he has had NBA stints with the Miami Heat and most recently, the Los Angeles Clippers.

During this season, he hasn’t seen much action on the court.

In 24 games played with the Clippers, he averaged 2.2 points in 9.7 minutes per game. On February 6, 2020, the Clippers sent Walton to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for a protected 2022 second-round draft pick. Shortly after, Walton was waived by the Hawks.

Walton will join a Pistons guard rotation that consists of Derrick Rose, Brandon Knight, and Jordan Bone. He’ll be additional depth for the Pistons at the guard spot following their buyout of Reggie Jackson’s contract.
