While the Detroit Pistons season is not going as planned, it’s not stopping them from servicing the community.
In partnership with Flagstar Bank, the Pistons will join 100 students in a Math Hoops Regional Tournament. The Math Hoops program ties itself to Common Core State Standards and 21st-century learning skills. Its goal is to encourage students to use basic math skills. In addition to that, Math Hoops wants students to have an understanding of statistics to collaborate effectively with their peers.
The event is this Thursday, March 5th at the Detroit Pistons Performance Center from 5 p.m.- 8 p.m. It will feature 50 schools from across the state of Michigan. The top-performing students from grades four through eight will participate in Math Hoops, a fast-paced basketball board game, in teams of two. The initiative of the Math Hoops program is for students to learn fundamental skills in math while utilizing the statistics of the favorite NBA and WNBA players. Flagstar Bank will award the winning teammates $500 each in a SimplyKids Saving Account from their bank.
Following the tournament, Pistons players Svi Mykhailiuk and Khyri Thomas will be in attendance to bring add a special element with an interactive court competition.
