Every year, the Detroit Pistons organization prides itself on its work off the court in the community, whether its building new basketball courts in the summer or passing out toys during Christmas.
For the Thanksgiving holiday, Pistons players and coaches took part in an event for 400 pre-registered families at the new Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center. Players and their families, coaches, staff, and volunteers handed out turkeys, non-perishable food, toiletries, basketballs, toothbrushes, and hot meals at the event. The hot meals were prepared by local chefs from venues around Detroit, including Shewolf, Grey Ghost, Savannah Blue, and Plum Market.
”Giving back is what life is all about and we are just trying to help the people that need help,” said Derrick Rose.
Pistons’ mascot Hooper, the Pistons dance team and drumline, and a live DJ engaged families throughout the evening, with Pistons One season ticket holders among the volunteers. The event was hosted in tandem with Feed the Children’s No Hunger Holidays campaign and kicked off the Detroit Pistons Season of Giving, presented by Meijer. Toothbrushes were donated by Delta Dental and turkeys were donated by the Langston & Sabrina Galloway Foundation and Andre Drummond.
Participating families were identified by Detroit PAL, Starfish Family Service, the City of Detroit Housing and Revitalization Department, Detroit Housing Commission, District 5 City Councilwoman Pro Tem Mary Sheffield, and Alternatives for Girls.
