Detroit Pistons Announce Melanie Harris as New President of Business Operations

The Detroit Pistons have appointed Melanie Harris as their new President of Business Operations, a move set to strengthen the team’s engagement with partners, sponsors, ticket holders, and fans. In her new role, Harris will lead the organization’s business functions, drive revenue growth, and deepen connections with the Pistons community.

Before joining the Pistons, Harris served as Vice President and General Manager for Nike, Inc.’s Jordan Brand North America. In this role, she led a cross-functional team that oversaw sales, merchandising, marketing, and strategy for the brand across the U.S. and Canada, helping to drive success for the multi-billion-dollar business. Additionally, Harris was a member of Nike’s Black Community Commitment task force, reflecting her dedication to social impact and diversity.

Pistons owner Tom Gores expressed confidence in Harris’ ability to take the organization to new heights, stating, “Melanie’s deep brand experience will help grow the business and increase focus with Pistons fans.” Gores, who personally led the search for Harris, added, “She is an experienced leader and innovative executive who will invigorate our business operations and bring a fresh perspective on how we engage our community of fans both locally and nationally.”

Harris’ appointment is part of Gores’ broader effort to assemble a leadership team that can drive the Pistons’ promising future. “During this critical offseason, we have expanded our executive team with top leadership talent on both the basketball and business sides of our organization. I’m excited to add Melanie’s capabilities and leadership to the mix,” said Gores.

Harris will report to Pistons Vice Chairman Arn Tellem, who praised her collaborative leadership style and alignment with the organization’s core values. “Melanie shares our commitment to hard work and community involvement. She’ll support our current team while bringing new ideas for engaging with business partners, ticket holders, and fans,” said Tellem.

Harris expressed her enthusiasm for joining the Pistons, saying, “I am excited to work with Mr. Gores and the talented team of professionals at the Detroit Pistons to strive for excellence and build on the great tradition of this franchise. Detroit is a fantastic sports town, and as the organization grows, there is a great opportunity for building business momentum and engagement.”

Harris brings an impressive track record to the Pistons, having previously served as Nike, Inc.’s Vice President of Strategy and Development. In this role, she played a key role in shaping Nike’s global corporate strategy, driving innovation, and fostering growth through strategic partnerships. Prior to Nike, Harris was a partner at Bain & Company, where she advised multinational companies on customer experience, digital marketing, and transformation efforts. She also championed Bain’s Social Impact and Diversity & Inclusion initiatives, working to recruit and retain Black and female business talent.

A native of New York City, Harris holds degrees from Yale University and Harvard Business School. Her extensive background in business leadership and her passion for community engagement are expected to make a significant impact on the Pistons’ future, both on and off the court.

With Harris at the helm of business operations, the Detroit Pistons are poised for a new era of success.
