The City of Detroit, Detroit Pistons, and Detroit Parks Coalition are pleased to announce the 2022 Pistons Neighbors Program, which provides free outdoor programming for children and families at Detroit’s Chandler Park, Palmer Park, Rouge Park, Pingree Park, and Romanowski Park. Programming will take place on Wednesdays – Sundays from 3:00 p.m. -7:00p.m., from July 6 through September 4, 2022.
The five city parks will host drop-in outdoor activities for all ages, such as basketball skills, sports training, live music, dance, yoga, and art. Programming will be provided by local vendors and presented in partnership with community-based park organizations. The Pistons Neighbors Program is funded by the William Davidson Foundation, Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, and the Detroit Pistons.
Now in its fourth year, the program upholds the Detroit Pistons’ commitments to Detroit’s parks. An expanded partnership with the newly formed Detroit Parks Coalition will allow an enhanced connection to neighborhood park organizations, ensuring that the programming is more relevant to and coordinated with local communities.
“The Detroit Pistons are thrilled to announce this year’s programming for the Pistons Neighbors Program,” said Arn Tellem, Vice Chairman of the Detroit Pistons. “When the Pistons moved back downtown, we made a commitment to be impactful and be all-in on the city. Through our partnership with the City of Detroit, William Davidson Foundation, and Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, we introduced the Pistons Neighbors Program to activate Detroit parks that include newly renovated basketball courts and provide free outdoor activities for families and youth to participate in and enjoy throughout the summer and into the fall.”
“Activating our parks with fun and engaging activities for Detroiters is a priority for the City,” said Dara O’Byrne, Chief Parks Planner, City of Detroit. We are thankful for the partnership with the Detroit Parks Coalition to expand our connection to local communities and for partners at the Detroit Pistons, Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, and the William Davidson Foundation, who recognize the importance of investing in public spaces and are dedicated to providing access to robust park programming for Detroiters.”
The Pistons Neighbors Program and Basketball For All initiative run concurrently with the organization’s six-year court refurbishment project with the City of Detroit that launched as part of the Piston’s move back to Detroit in 2017. The Pistons courts project enters phase five of completion this summer with 52 courts in 37 parks completed by the end of 2022. Basketball For All efforts provide basketballs to Detroit youth, encourage community participation and usage of refurbished courts, and teach the benefits of basketball. Over 50,000 basketballs have been distributed since the first year of activation in 2018. Basketball For All program supporting partners include UWM, Strategic Staffing Solutions, Nike, DTE, and Delta Dental.
A sampling of summer activities is listed below; complete information is available at www.pistons.com/neighbors. Advance registration is not required.
