Detroit Phoenix Center Opens Applications for Memorial Scholarship

The Detroit Phoenix Center, a nonprofit organization that responds to the needs of underserved and transient youth in Detroit that frequently experience housing instability is currently accepting applications for its 2021 Blair M. Smith Memorial Scholarship through July 15, 2021.

The $500 scholarships will be awarded to youth who demonstrate an academic fortitude and a desire to pursue higher education. In addition, each recipient is required to carry a GPA of 2.5 or greater, be currently enrolled in an institution of higher learning – community colleges and trade schools are accepted and identify as having lived experience with homelessness, foster care or the juvenile justice system.

“I am incredibly proud and honored to be able to provide deserving students with this scholarship,” said Courtney Smith, Founder and CEO of the Detroit Phoenix Center.  “Each one of these incredible youth who receives the scholarship has overcome tremendous odds and exemplifies our mission of building a strong community connection and actualizing their dreams.”

Blair M. Smith was a compassionate, free spirited young man who loved learning.  He served as the founding president of Detroit Phoenix Center’s Youth Development Leadership Council.  He transitioned in 2017 and left behind a powerful legacy and charge to us all to dispel myths surrounding mental health challenges and to also remove obstacles and barriers to success.

Completed applications and a copy of transcripts are due by midnight on July 15, 2021. Transcripts can be sent to [email protected]. For more information and to apply for the Blair M. Smith Memorial Scholarship visit here.
