Detroit Parks Features Pinwheel Gardens for Child Abuse Prevention Month

Child abuse happens more often than people think.

In Michigan alone, the state had over 147,000 reports of suspected child abuse or neglect in 2020, which is about a 15 percent drop from 2019, according to statistics.

To bring awareness to this issue, in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the Downtown Detroit Partnership will “plant” 5,000 blue pinwheels and one oversized pinwheel, which will illuminate two of the downtown parks in blue lights through end of April.

BCBSM’s planting the pinwheels will raise awareness of child abuse and neglect in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, and they will be located across three Downtown Detroit Parks it manages, according to a press release.

Additionally, one larger-than-life blue pinwheel built by Detroit’s own Parade Co. will be front and center at Campus Martius Park and DDP will turn park lights blue at two of the parks to further serve as a visual reminder that everyone plays a role in preventing child abuse and neglect.

“The DDP is a proud community partner of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Our parks and public spaces not only active and vibrant destinations, but they serve as a base for dozens of mission-driven community events and campaigns annually to reach thousands of people that visit the parks daily,” said David Cowan, Chief Public Spaces Officer, Downtown Detroit Partnership in a press release.

The pinwheel gardens are located at Campus Martius Park, 800 Woodward Ave., Capitol Park, 1200 Griswold St. and Grand Circus Park, 101-157 Witherell St.

The “Blue” Park Lights are located at Campus Martius Park, 800 Woodward Ave., and Beacon Park, 1901 Grand River Ave.
