Detroit Parks and Rec Seeks Seasonal Workers Through On-Site Hiring Fairs

Looking for a summer gig? The City of Detroit’s Parks and Recreation Division wants to fill 100 seasonal positions, starting at $15/hr.

From play leaders to lifeguards, a wide range of seasonal positions are open, with an urgent need to fill them to keep recreation, swimming, and other necessary programs active and available for Detroiters.

“Since the pandemic, our youth, teens, and seniors have had little to no outlets to release energy and anxiety, making the rec centers all the more necessary for the community,” explained Tracy Lawrence, manager of operations, Parks and Recreation division. “Our rec center resources, services, and programs provide an outlet and safe space for our community which is crucial to improving the quality of life for all our neighborhoods to succeed.”

Detroit Parks and Recreation’s vision is to improve the quality of life for all Detroiters through parks, greenways, recreation centers, and programs using an equity framework. Filling seasonal positions within the division is one step closer to making the vision a reality which is why the City is hosting multiple job fairs in May, with on-site hiring.

“We want people willing to be mentors and leaders,” explained Lawrence. “It’s important for people to be excited to give back to the community through their work by providing affordable services to those that need family, fun leisure activities, and programs that will positively impact their health and wellness.”

To apply, applicants must be 18 years and older. However, Junior lifeguard positions require applicants to be just 16 and older. In addition, all applicants must submit a criminal background check and have a valid state ID.
