The Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL) is interested in helping youth find their greatness — it even says so in their slogan.
Detroit PAL helps young people throughout the city find achievements in athletics, academics, and leadership development programs, and has been since the community program was founded in 1969.
On Tuesday, June 29, state legislators from the Michigan House of Representatives, including Speaker of the House Jason Wentworth., announced a new $15 million commitment to Detroit PAL for PAL’s new Community Connection Initiative.
The press conference, held at Corner Ballpark in the city, coincided with the opening of Detroit PAL’s Diamond Sports Baseball Program season.
Wentworth announced the multimillion funding to help broaden the organization’s goals across Detroit and Michigan, according to a Detroit Free Press article. Wentworth also said in the article that the money was to show backing for community policing.
Detroit PAL’s CEO, Robert Jamerson, added in the article that the group is presently wanting to expand their TEAM UP model, called the Community Connection Initiative, by broadening their reach in southeast Michigan — and the funding is the way to do that.
“We are more than just sports” Jamerson, a former PAL kid, said in the article. “We are trying to help our kids find their greatness. And in order to do that, we have to be able to expose them to other things that work in a sustainable way. This funding will allow us to be able to do that.”
