Detroit PAL Offers Unique Opportunity for Youth with Jr. Officials Program

The Detroit PAL league is taking an unorthodox, but vital approach toward introducing youth to the game of basketball. Detroit PAL will kick off the “Jr. Officials Program” on July 7. The 4-week program is designed to introduce youth ages 12-18 to the officiating side of basketball. Each child will be taught by MHSAA and NCAA officials. The camp will be held each Tuesday from 5 PM to 7 PM at Corner Ball Park in Detroit, and the cost is $10. Youth are encouraged to have basketball experience before attending the program. Registration will close on June 1 or until filled, and the program will end on July 28.

The program will introduce principles such as:

  • Game Rules
  • Floor Mechanics
  • Hand Signals/Reporting
  • Officiating Philosophies
  • Rule Enforcement
  • Film Review and Exams

Selected participants will have a chance to officiate a live game at the Princess of the Court Girls Basketball League with an Adult Referee.

Recently, Detroit PAL was awarded $92,340 through the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which helps raise money for Detroit organizations through golf tournaments.

Space is limited for the program. To register, CLICK HERE or call (313) 833-1600.
