Detroit Opens Warming Centers and Respite Locations for Winter Relief

As winter’s cold embraces Detroit, the city has launched a comprehensive initiative to provide warmth and shelter to its residents, particularly those experiencing homelessness. Detroit recreation centers and library branches, doubling as respite locations, are now open during operational hours, offering a haven from the harsh weather.

The City of Detroit has funded three warming centers operational until March 31. These centers not only offer a respite from the cold but also provide essential services such as two meals a day, showers, sleeping facilities, and housing assistance. Supervised around the clock, these centers ensure the safety and security of their residents. The centers, operated by Cass Community Social Services and Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, cater to families, single women, and single men.

Residents in need of shelter can contact Wayne Metro Community Action Agency at 866-313-2520, available Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Veterans seeking shelter have a dedicated line available until 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

Beyond these warming centers, Detroit has also transformed several of its recreation centers into daytime respite locations.

The three warming centers are operated by:

Cass Community Social Services – Serves families and single women

Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries – Serves families and single women

Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries – Serves single males
