An effective nurse is caring, understanding, non-judgmental and has a strong ability to empathize with patients from all walks of life. Those characteristics are what make Angel Reeves great at her job as a wound care nurse and even greater in life through her community work in the Detroit area.
Reeves created her Golden Nurse non-profit organization in December of 2017 to connect with other black nurses around the city of Detroit and to continue to give back to the people beyond the hospital setting. In just a few months of existence, Golden Nurse has given away winter accessories and donated 400 cases of water to the people of Flint in March.
The organization is hosting a “Mommy and Me” community baby shower Saturday May 12 from 3-7 p.m. at the Detroit Delta Prep Academy for Social Justice located at 3550 John C. Lodge 48201. There, Reeves and her Golden Nurse volunteers will collect and give away baby items for anyone in need, just in time for Mother’s Day.
“I was speaking with a nursing aide at my job who’s currently expecting her first child in July and she came to me about not having certain things for her baby,” Reeves said. “I’m a mother myself, so I gave her some advice and I also wanted to help her. From there, I started talking to other people trying to gather items that would be a blessing to someone else. Then I thought about creating an event that other mothers could come and get things as well.”
Reeves has begun to receive donations already, but more is needed. They are accepting donations for boys and girls, such as baby clothes, car seats, unused formula, cribs, blankets, toys, diapers, maternity clothing and anything else a mother and her child(ren) would need on an everyday basis. The community baby shower will be on a first come, first served basis and all items are asked to be either brand new or gently used.
“This event means a lot to me because I am a mother,” said Reeves. “I have a great support system for my son and his father is amazing, but you never know what help someone else may need or what they are going through. No one is too big for help and we just want all the mothers to come out and take what they need. This event is open to the public.”
