The Detroit NAACP branch is reminding voters of their rights ahead of the city’s municipal primary election that will narrow the field of mayoral candidates down to the top two vote getters.
The NAACP Detroit Branch “Take Your Soles to the Polls” Campaign is prepared to protect the vote for the Tuesday, Aug. 5 election. The NAACP Detroit Branch Voter Hotline will be available for assisting voters with questions about voting, and to report any signs of voter irregularities. The voter hotline,(313) 664-2424, will be available for the entire length of time the polls are open – 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.
The city will soon elect a new mayor as Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has decided to run for governor as an independent instead of seeking reelection for a fourth term as mayor.
The majority Black city will once again be served by a Black mayor.
While Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield and Triumph Church pastor Rev. Solomon Kinloch are viewed as favorites to advance, Saunteel Jenkins, a nonprofit CEO and former city council president, attorney Todd Perkins and former police chief James Craig are thought to have sizable followings.
City Council Member Fred Durhal III has earned endorsements from business leaders, while Joel Haashiim, John Barlow and DaNetta Simpson are running bare bones campaigns targeting grassroots activists.
