Detroit Metropolitan Airport Welcomes Two New Small Businesses as SOAR Program Takes Flight

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is making a significant move to support local entrepreneurship with the launch of its “Small Business Operators Arriving Ready” (SOAR) pilot program. This initiative welcomes Rebel Nell and Quix Chocolate, two beloved local businesses, to the Warren Cleage Evans Terminal. The SOAR program is a fantastic opportunity for these businesses to reach the diverse and dynamic crowd that passes through DTW daily.

The first announcement of the SOAR program back in February of this year sparked considerable excitement among local entrepreneurs and the community. Now, just a few months later, the anticipation has culminated in the official introduction of the program’s first participants, Rebel Nell and Quix Chocolate. This swift progression from concept to reality highlights the commitment of DTW and the Wayne County Airport Authority to foster local business growth and innovation. The revelation of these two distinct and culturally rich stores brings the initial vision of the SOAR program to life and setting a promising precedent for future small business ventures at the airport.

Wayne County Airport Authority CEO Chad Newton expressed the excitement surrounding this new venture: “Rebel Nell and Quix Chocolate will expand our Concessions program and give DTW customers more unique options in the Evans Terminal. We’re excited to welcome these small businesses as the first participants in the SOAR pilot program, as we empower entrepreneurs to take their companies to even higher heights.”

Rebel Nell, a Detroit-based jewelry company, stands out not just for its unique products but for its mission. Founded by Amy Peterson, Rebel Nell creates jewelry from materials with deep Detroit roots, like fallen graffiti and remnants of landmarks such as Joe Louis Arena and Belle Isle. More than just a jewelry company, Rebel Nell provides employment and support for women facing significant challenges, including homelessness and mental illness. “We are honored and excited to be a part of the SOAR Small Business Program,” Peterson said. “The airport is giving small businesses like ours a fantastic opportunity. We’ve always dreamed of having a store in the airport, and now travelers can take a piece of Detroit home with them.”

Quix Chocolate, another participant in the SOAR program, brings a taste of Belgium to Detroit. Originally founded in Lanklaar, Belgium in 1947 and now based in Ferndale, Michigan, Quix Chocolate is known for its traditional Belgian chocolates made with original recipes. David Ogloza, President and Owner of Quix Chocolate, shared his enthusiasm: “We are thrilled to be opening a venue at the airport. Travelers will be able to enjoy our fine Belgian chocolates and confections, made right here in Michigan. It’s a unique offering that will make their journey a bit sweeter.”

The SOAR program is the brainchild of Renata C. Evans, the First Lady of Wayne County. Drawing from her experience as a former small business owner, Mrs. Evans saw the potential in creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs at the airport. Her vision has been instrumental in shaping this program, ensuring that small business owners are prepared to thrive in the bustling environment of airport retail. “We’re grateful to Mrs. Evans for bringing us this idea and for helping to develop the program,” Newton added. “Small businesses are at the heart of Michigan’s economy, and SOAR is one more way DTW is investing in our local communities.”

Starting in August, travelers through the Evans Terminal near gate D12 will have the chance to experience the creativity and craftsmanship of Rebel Nell and Quix Chocolate. This initiative is more than an expansion of retail options; it’s a celebration of local talent and a testament to the power of community support. As these businesses take flight, they symbolize the spirit of Detroit – resilient, innovative, and always looking forward.
