Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA) recently announced their Friends Don’t Let Friends Go Hungry giving campaign. The campaign highlights the role that the agency plays in ensuring that home-bound and disabled seniors receive nutritious meals daily through their Detroit Meals on Wheels Program.
DAAA has been serving older adults age 60 years and over in Detroit, the five Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Harper Woods, and Highland Park since 1980. DAAA believes that nutrition is a basic need and it is the first step in health, wellness, and senior independence.
As the number of older adults in their service areas continues to increase, funding has not kept up with demand. More than 700 seniors are waiting for meals and their current clients face being placed on waiting list.
In efforts to prevent this from happening, the agency kicked off their campaign by having a Dine to Donate event at Granite City Detroit. Proceeds from dine-in orders and carry out orders were donated back to the agency. Rhonda Parker, Fund Development Manager, “The event was a great start for our campaign in gaining support from the community. We plan on having more events like this in the future because the Meals on Wheels program is a vital resource that so many of our seniors depend on.” As the campaign continues, DAAA is seeking support from their staff, volunteers, and the community. The Detroit Meals on Wheels Program is a vital resource that many of our seniors depend on.
