S.A.Y. Detroit is teaming up with the Cooper Standard Foundation on Monday and Tuesday (June 13-14) to construct a playground and urban garden in the same east side Detroit community where the group rebuilt and gave away six homes to needy families a year ago.
Dozens of employees from Cooper Standard are returning to the Morningside neighborhood to launch a two-day beautification project from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The playground and garden is located on Three Mile Road, between Munich and Waveney streets.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is scheduled to join the team, including S.A.Y. Detroit founder and best-selling author Mitch Albom, at the site at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.
“Mitch Albom and S.A.Y. Detroit have been such great partners in helping to revitalize this neighborhood, as well as through so many other of their projects in the city,” Mayor Duggan said. “This project is a great example of how our demolition program is laying the groundwork for what our neighborhoods can be by providing opportunities to create beautiful spaces for residents in the surrounding community.”
Albom said: “We are thankful that Cooper Standard continues to be an outstanding community partner with us, and we are once again grateful to have Mayor Duggan joining us. This project is a shining example of our commitment to benefit families and beautify the neighborhood.”
In June 2015, Duggan was in attendance at the first home-giveaway on neighboring Courville Street to support S.A.Y. Detroit’s Working Homes/Working Families initiative of placing working families in need of housing into refurbished homes.
The house giveaway was the highlight of a three-day collaborative effort involving S.A.Y. Detroit, Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, Cooper Standard and DOW. More than 300 employees from the companies volunteered in helping with the project.
