On Wednesday, Mayor Mike Duggan announced his endorsement of Democratic State Senator Adam Hollier for the 13th Congressional District.

The press conference was held at The Corner Ballpark in Corktown as an ongoing youth baseball game played on behind the speakers. The Duggan Leadership Fund published a concurrent press release of the endorsement.

“We need somebody who can represent Detroit and our surrounding communities,” said Mayor Duggan. “We have got to have the city and the suburbs working together. And today, Adam Hollier is representing not only the city of Detroit but eight surrounding suburbs and he’s doing a great job.”

Since 2019, Hollier has served as a U.S. State Senator representing the 2nd Senate district in Wayne County, including Detroit, the Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Harper Woods and Highland Park.

“As we talked about my history in this district,” said Senator Hollier. “From the very moment I started working in Lansing, I was working on issues in not just the city of Detroit, but all across this district. Working on the (Detroit Region) Aerotropolis down in western Wayne community and having had the honor and the blessings to continue to represent the east side of this district.”

Hollier began working in public capacity in 2004 as the District Director for State Senator Buzz Thomas. He went on to work with other local officials in different capacities, spearheading issues such as automobile insurance reforms and manufacturing, lead pipe removal, and fair and equal representation for Michiganders during the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MIRC) redistricting process.

He was recently awarded the 2022 Michigan Chronicle Men of Excellence Award and is endorsed by the Michigan Chronicle. Hollier spoke to the Chronicle about addressing the escalating issue of affordable housing in Detroit.

“The first thing we have to do is fundamentally change what we think about affordable housing, “said Sen. Hollier. “So as we talk about the federal housing policy right after World War II made affordable units by ensuring that people who worked had the space to build housing and to that, it hasn’t been done in a generation.

Literally the definition for red lining was the space that were not providing people with housing opportunities. We can change that by fundamentally investing in real housing. The way that we do that is by expanding our FHA lending programs, expanding the kind of affordable hosing tax credits that go out to developers so that they can build $100,00 home housing units, so that they can build two-bedroom apartments. That someone can rent for two for $600 a month.”

Sen. Hollier’s congressional campaign runs on a platform focused issues including fueling the job economy and combatting inflation costs, investing in education and small businesses, public safety safeguarding clean drinking water, and women’s issues toward “closing the maternal health gap for Black and Brown women.”

The seat is currently held by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib.
