Detroit Love

Tough times or not, in Detroit General Motors, Ford and Chrysler are as much a sense of American pride as are baseball and apple pie anywhere else.

In fact, some Detroiters would probably rather be cruising the city in their Mustangs or some classic Chevys than spending a day at the ballpark any day. You need look no further than Belle Isle on a sunny Saturday afternoon for reference.Of course, that’s not to take anything away from Detroiters’ love for their Tigers. But for some in the city, the passion for American automobiles runs that deep. It’s been that way for decades. And at no time is that love more prevalent than August when Detroiters are revving up for the annual Woodward Dream Cruise, taking place Saturday, Aug. 15

Detroit businessman Michael Farrow, president of the Farrow Group doing the demolition on Tiger Stadium, owns several cars, including a 2008 Bentley GT. But, he said, his ’62 Chevrolet Impala holds a special place in his heart. “I had to have an American vehicle before I got anything,” said Farrow. “It’s a sense of personal pride for Detroit and my country.  I’m still going to have my non-American toys, but I’ll always have my American cars too.”

Farrow, like many Detroiters, always looks forward to the Woodward Dream Cruise and an opportunity to showcase his vehicle and join the thousands of others who attend the event to share their passion for American cars. This year’s cruise is especially important because of the trying year the Detroit auto industry has undergone, said Farrow.
