Detroit Homeless Benefit From Shinola’s ‘Hot Tin Roof’ Cocktail Donations

The Shinola Hotel developed a signature “Hot Tin Roof” cocktail, which the hotel will match donations and give back to the Detroit-based non-profit Empowerment Plan, fighting homelessness.

The words “homelessness” and “hope” don’t always go together.

But through a collaboration with the Shinola Hotel and local nonprofit organization Empowerment Plan, connections are being made to help vulnerable residents with nowhere to go.

Shinola Hotel has developed a signature “Hot Tin Roof” cocktail that gives back to the Detroit-based non-profit Empowerment Plan, fighting homelessness with a mission to employ and empower individuals and break the generational cycle of poverty by offering sleeping bags that can be transformed into coats for those in need.

From now until March 31st, customers can purchase a signature drink where $1 from every drink will be donated and Shinola Hotel will match the total donations at the end of March.

The Empowerment Plan creates significant economic impact by serving as a stepping stone out of poverty into a state of stability. The core of our work stems from our intensive 2-year employment model focused on providing job readiness training and support services to our workforce.

“It is because of this model and the strength of those we employ, that every single person has moved out of the shelter within the first 90 days of working with us,” according to the Empowerment Plan’s website.

In the years since its founding in 2012, Empowerment Plan has evolved from an idea in a college class into an internationally recognized workforce development organization. By pairing full-time employment with a wide range of supportive services, we have helped dozens of individuals achieve financial stability and independence for the whole family. Our holistic approach addresses everything from housing and childcare to transportation, education, and more.

“This is the first job that has given me a sense of self-worth and value,” Seamstress Sherika Lane said of working at the organization. “I feel like I am part of something bigger and feel a sense of support and community when I come to work.”

The “Hot Tin Roof” drink can be bought at Shinola Hotel in the Living Room, Camp Birdy, San Morello, Evening Bar, The Brakeman, and in guest rooms.
