The Detroit Head Start enrollment campaign is officially underway, beginning this week. The organization is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
“Head Start is more than just preschool; the program also ensures that children have their dental and medical needs met and that all their health screenings are up to date,” said Cynthia Bonk-Foley, Early Head Start and Head Start executive director.
The federally funded program offers early childhood education to nearly 3,000 qualifying low-income families annually. The program bolsters more than 60 locations throughout the city.
“Research has shown that children who have a Head Start experience are much more likely to have school success,” said Bonk-Foley.
With an increase in funding over the last 18 months, up to 1,500 additional vacancies are open to pregnant mothers, children ages six-weeks to five-years-old and their families. Families interested in enrolling into the Detroit Head Start Learning Network can schedule an appointment for an interview.
“It’s been a real community effort to make sure the parents of Detroit children know the importance of Head Start and the availability of slots,” she said. “We’ve been working collaboratively with Detroit Public Schools and other local community organizations to help us identify and recruit children.”
