The city of Detroit, known for its rich musical history, is gearing up for its biggest dance music weekend on Memorial Day. On Sunday, May 28, 2023, the 5th annual Detroit Diaspora Day Party will take place at Epiphany Community House in the city’s East English Village Neighborhood. The event promises to be a celebration of Detroit’s artistic and cultural communities, with a focus on showcasing their contributions to the world.
The party will feature a lineup of exquisite music selectors from Detroit and around the country, playing electronic music that fits the mode of dance music most popular in the city during this holiday weekend. The music will traverse various sounds, including techno, house, afro beats, hip hop, soul, bossa nova, amapiano, and more, taking music lovers on a global journey.
While the event is primarily about music, it is also about much more. Co-organizer Melinda “MeMe” Anderson of Studio M Detroit explains that the Detroit Diaspora Day Party is about showcasing the diversity of Detroit’s artistic and cultural communities and their contributions to the world. From the Diaspora Marketplace to the Buy Back the Block Panel discussion, the event aims to create a space where people can come together, share ideas, dance, and commune.
“We hope that this event will inspire others to continue to invest in Detroit’s creative economy and help keep the momentum of building a more vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable city,” Anderson says.
The Diaspora Marketplace will feature a variety of vendors selling locally made goods, and the Buy Back the Block Panel discussion will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn about initiatives to promote economic and community development in Detroit.
Overall, the 5th annual Detroit Diaspora Day Party promises to be a celebration of music, culture, and community. It is an opportunity for Detroit to showcase its vibrant and diverse artistic and cultural communities and their contributions to the world. It is also a call to action for others to invest in Detroit’s creative economy and help build a more vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable city.
