Detroit residents should take note of the upcoming holiday schedule for City offices. Most City of Detroit offices will be closed starting December 22, 2023, in observance of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, with normal operations resuming on January 2, 2024. Essential services such as police, fire, and bus services will continue uninterrupted during this period.
Service Adjustments and Availability:
- Department of Public Works: Refuse, recycling, and bulk items will not be collected on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Residents should expect collections to occur one day later than their usual schedule. Collections that typically happen on Fridays will be shifted to Saturdays for both holiday weeks.
- Municipal Parking Department: The Ford Underground Garage and the Eastern Market Garage will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Additionally, there will be no parking enforcement at meters from December 22 to January 1, providing a perfect opportunity for community members to patronize Detroit businesses during the holiday season.
- Detroit Health Department: On Wednesday, December 27, the Health Department will conduct immunization clinics at two locations: 100 Mack Avenue and Samaritan Center at 5555 Conner. These clinics will offer a range of vaccinations, including flu and COVID-19 vaccines, and COVID-19 testing, with no appointment required.
- Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Clinics: During the holidays, six WIC clinic locations will remain open, providing both in-clinic and remote services. Three clinics at 5716 Michigan Avenue, 18930 Greenfield, and 5555 Conner will offer in-clinic services. Remote clinic services will be available at 7900 Kercheval, 9053 Woodward, and 6550 West Warren. These clinics will operate on December 26, 27, and 28, with varying hours.
- Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT): DDOT will operate on a Sunday schedule on Christmas (December 25) and New Year’s Day (January 1). Regular Sunday service will be provided on December 24 and 31, with normal weekday service on December 22 and 29.
- Detroit People Mover: This service will continue its operations during the holidays but will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
- Detroit Water and Sewerage Department: The department will be on call to respond to emergencies, including water main breaks. Customer Service for account assistance will be closed from December 22-25 and December 29-January 1. Residents can still pay their bill by phone using the automated system or at a kiosk, or access their accounts online.
- Buildings, Safety Engineering, and Environmental Department (BSEED): BSEED will be closed from December 22 through January 1. While electronic and online services through ACCELA will be available, users should expect delayed responses. For emergencies like no heat, power outages, or water/sewage issues in basements, residents can contact BSEED at (313) 224-3154.
- Office of the Chief Financial Officer: This office will be closed during the holiday period, but customers can access services online, including downloading forms, viewing financial reports, accessing property tax information, and making payments. Various payment options for City of Detroit property taxes are available, including online, mobile app, phone, or kiosk payments. Mailed payments are suggested only as a last resort.
Despite the holiday closures, many City services, such as tax and fee payments and permit applications, will remain accessible online. Residents may also utilize the DivDat kiosk or mobile app for certain payments. The City encourages residents to make use of these convenient services during the holiday season.
Residents are encouraged to plan accordingly and take advantage of the available services during the holiday season. The City of Detroit wishes everyone a safe and joyful holiday period.
