Detroit Celebrates Completion of its East Riverfront Transformation Project

Marking one of the most pivotal moments in its history, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, in collaboration with Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, founding partners, dignitaries, and community members, is set to commemorate the culmination of the 3.5-mile East Riverfront project. This endeavor, envisioned two decades ago, has finally brought to life the transformation of a stretch from Joe Louis Arena to Belle Isle into a stunning public space filled with parks and trails.

This monumental achievement introduces the Uniroyal Promenade, a half-mile extension of the Riverwalk set along the historic Uniroyal site that sits between the iconic Detroit riverfront and Jefferson Avenue. A noteworthy aspect of this section is that it seamlessly bridges the gap between two of the Conservancy’s crown jewels: Gabriel Richard Park and Mt. Elliott Park. Moreover, this addition ensures that locals and visitors alike have unhindered and secure access to the Belle Isle Bridge.

This transformative journey began in 2003, with the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy spearheading the initiative. Over the years, their tireless efforts resulted in raising a staggering sum of over $200 million, which was dedicated to the metamorphosis of the Detroit riverfront. This strategic investment didn’t just breathe new life into the parks and trails along the river; it also catalyzed over $2 billion in combined public and private development. As a testament to its success, the Detroit Riverfront today proudly welcomes a footfall of around 3.5 million enthusiastic visitors every year.

The grand celebration to honor this accomplishment is scheduled for Saturday, October 21, starting at 10 AM. The event promises to be a festive affair with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a delightful stroll across the newly minted promenade, and an ensuing community celebration.

The event’s distinguished attendees include:

  • Matthew Cullen, Chairman, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy
  • Robert Davis, Retired, Senior Advisor, Michigan Department of Transportation
  • Mayor Mike Duggan, City of Detroit
  • Wendy Jackson, Managing Director, The Detroit Program, Kresge Foundation
  • Terry Rhadigan, Vice President of Global Communications and Corporate Giving, General Motors
  • William Smith, Chief Financial Officer, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy
  • Mark Wallace, President & CEO, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy

For those eager to be a part of this momentous occasion, the venue details are as follows: Venue: Mt. Elliott Park Address: 110 Mt. Elliott Street, Detroit, MI 48207

For those who cannot make it in person, the event will be broadcast live for a global audience via the Detroit Riverfront’s official Facebook page.
