Detroit Bar Launched During Pandemic Thrives, Celebrates First Anniversary

Bars and clubs around the U.S. saw a 27% revenue decline in 2020 due to the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak. But one east sidebar, Good Vibes Lounge, has defied those odds. The 1830-square-foot neighborhood hotspot in the East English Village neighborhood has thrived and will celebrate its one-year anniversary on June 19 also known as Juneteenth from 3 p.m. to 12 a.m.

“We originally planned to open March 25, 2020, and like many others were devastated by the impact of COVID-19,” said Portia Powell, owner of Good Vibes Lounge. “As a brand new business that wasn’t yet operating, I didn’t qualify for many of the resources available. However, I was officially able to open the doors on Juneteenth. What has helped us to survive during the pandemic is planning and being able to constantly adjust and alter our business model. During the second shutdown, we pivoted and focused more on food and to-go drinks.”

The bar, which mostly gained popularity through word-of-mouth, has become a staple for people from around metro Detroit of all ages, gender, race, and economical backgrounds.

Good Vibes is known for ticketed brunches, amazing signature cocktails, and popular dishes—like its lobster burger, seafood combo, and Henny wings.

As part of the one-year anniversary celebration, Good Vibes will introduce the patio in the back of the lounge—known as “The Backyard,” where it will provide more seating and an outdoor dining experience. During the celebration, guests will enjoy free drink samples from major vendors, including Don Julio, free Juneteenth paraphernalia, and spins from a live DJ. They can also capture the moment in a photo booth.

“We didn’t know if we would make it to see this,” Powell said. “This one-year anniversary is for our loyal customers, our neighborhood community and everyone who has supported and made Good Vibes thrive.”

To experience the Good Vibes Lounge, visit 16801 Harper Ave., Detroit, MI 48224. It is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from noon to 12 a.m.; Fridays noon to 2 a.m.; Saturdays 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. (with a ticketed brunch with R&B music from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.); and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a ticketed brunch with trap music.

To attend the Juneteenth Celebration stop by on June 19 from  3 p.m. to 12 a.m. For more information, go to https://www.gvlounge.com or follow Good Vibes Lounge on social media at https://www.facebook.com/GoodVibesDetroit and https://www.instagram.com/goodvibeslounge/.
