The Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA) will deliver 6,000 Holiday Meals on Wheels this Thanksgiving with help from a $30,000 donation and 400 volunteers from Ford Motor Company, and 800 more volunteers from the community. DAAA’s Holiday Meals on Wheels program provides a holiday meal to homebound seniors in Detroit, the Grosse Pointes, Harper Woods, Hamtramck and Highland Park.
“Thanksgiving is America’s most-cherished meal and we want to make sure our seniors have the opportunity to enjoy this family tradition,” said Paul Bridgewater, DAAA President and CEO. “Ford Motor Fund’s generous donation will help us to deliver 6,000 fresh, hot meals to seniors on Thanksgiving Day. It is not only a donation to DAAA, but a gift to our entire senior community.”
This is the sixth year Ford Motor Company Fund has supported DAAA’s Holiday Meals on Wheels program and this year’s theme is: “Going forward together, putting meals on wheels this Thanksgiving.” “Ford and its employees are thankful that we’re able to help bring back some of the joy of the season to our neighbors,” said Jim Vella, president, Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services.
“Ford volunteers understand that creating stronger communities starts with helping those less fortunate than ourselves.” The meals are prepared by Valley Services, a national food services company, in their USDA-certified kitchen at 1980 Bagley Street in Detroit. Valley Services has been a partner with DAAA for more than 10 years.
The Holiday Meal on Wheels will be prepared fresh the morning of Thanksgiving and will include: turkey breast, dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, fruit juice, milk, cranberry sauce, apple pie and a whole wheat roll. Volunteers and workers assist DAAA and Valley Services on Wednesday, November 27, 8 a.m. to noon and Thursday, November 28, 6 a.m. – 10 a.m., to prepare and package the meals. The meals are then delivered to locations across Metro Detroit where the volunteers help distribute Thanksgiving dinner to 6,000 seniors’ doors.
