Detroit ACE Partners With DSO to Offer Special, Musical Experience for Families

The City Office of Arts, Culture and Entrepreneurship (Detroit ACE) is proud to partner with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) kick off the summer season with a free Detroit Neighborhood Initiative Event Saturday, June 4, 1:00-5:00 p.m.  at Durfee Innovation Center, 2470 Collingwood St, Detroit, 48206.  

1 p.m.  — The DSO will offer workshops, swag & resources from local partners, including Songwriting, Instrument Zoo, Early Childhood Music, Instrument making, and more! 

3 p.m. —  Audiences can enjoy performances by a string quartet from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, DSO Senza students and local talent.

Then, the DSO and Chandler Park Conservancy will host the second annual “Sounds of Summer” concert at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 11 at Chandler Park featuring jazz, Motown, and gospel! The event features free, family friendly performance and free food and drinks while supplies last. Gregory Walker is metro-Detroit based saxophonist, composer and educator who blends styles based in African American music. Walker has performed with world renowned artists such as Steve Wilson, Alan Ferber, Don Aliquo and Vinnie Ciesielski. He also is Director of Bands at Harper Woods High School.

Musicians from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra play DSO cellist Jeremy Crosmer’s Motown Reimagined 

DSO cellist Jeremy Crosmer has committed to bringing Motown back to the DSO through the arrangement of 15 virtuosic arrangements of Motown hits for string quartet, a soundtrack for life in this city.  

Testimony Sings is a spirit-filled, all-female quintet who began their ministry through song in 2005.

Angela Bostic, Keisha Lanae’, Chandra Lewis, Lori Waddles and Lori Wesby comprise the group, which has ministered in song at various congregations and music festivals, including the International Jazz Festival and community events across the state. They sing all genres including classical, chamber, jazz, R&B and soul, but their first true love remains traditional and contemporary gospel.
