Tyress Trearndos Mathews, 36 of Westland was arraigned today from his hospital bed in connection with the murder of a Taylor police officer.
Mathews, who pled not guilty was charged with premeditated murder in the first degree and murder of a peace officer, both punishable by life in prison without parole. He was also charged with assault with intent to murder, a felon in possession, felony firearm and a habitual 4th offender, all felonious charges.
On July 23, Cpl. Matthew Edwards and his partner responded to a breaking and entering in progress on the 12000 block of Pine Street in Taylor, Michigan at approximately 5:47 a.m.
Mathews, who was carrying a bag, allegedly approached Cpl. Edwards, stating that he had an argument with his wife and needed to re-enter their apartment to get his keys. He then allegedly shot the officer and turned to run while exchanging gunfire with Cpl. Edwards’ partner.
Cpl. Edwards, 31 was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Mathews was also taken to the hospital and is still undergoing care.
He is being held without bond. His preliminary exam is scheduled on Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.
