The Detroit Association of Black Organizations is sponsoring a Drive-In Gala event to screen the exclusive world premiere of “Ailey.” Alvin Ailey was a critically exclaimed African-American dancer, choreographer, and activist who founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York in 1958. Hosted by Tony Award Winner Savion Glover, the evening includes a gourmet dinner prepared by LeCulture Cafe as well as performances by Body Rhythm Dance Theatre. The Gala will be held at Willow Metro Park in New Boston, Michigan on July 10th, 2021 from 8:00 pm-11:30 pm.
Ailey is a documentary that follows the life of Alvin Ailey directed by Jamila Wingot. Originally premiered at the Sundance Festival in January, DABO has developed the Drive-In Gala for an exclusive screening of the film. The Gala will also honor Betty L. Brooks, Lisa McCall and Anthony Smith who are 2021 Horace L. Sheffield Exceptional Recognition in Arts Patronages. Tickets for the event are $35 and can be purchased online at www.dabodetroitinc.com/events. All proceeds for the event will be supporting DABO’s HIV/AIDS Intervention program.
