Cupcakes and Coding sparks tech conversation among kindergartners

As efforts grow nationwide to implement computer science in high schools, a local mom and software developer is giving local children a head start. “Coding and Cupcakes with Kindergartners” is an initiative where Sharen Eddings’ helps students get more tech savvy at earlier ages. The event will be held at 12:30pm Saturday, April 21, 2018 at New Paradigm Loving Academy, 1000 Lynn St. in Detroit.
The program will introduce children ages 4 and 5 to innovative programming concepts and technical problem-solving.
“It is critical that children are not only proficient in reading, but that they are well-versed in digital literacy, in order for them to shift from consuming technology to producing technology,” says Thea Marsh, principal of New Paradigm Loving Academy. “I am excited to partner with Sharen Eddings to help children understand technology.”
Eddings learned to code when her son became ill. She decided to change careers in order to have flexible hours and increase earnings. When Eddings son’s school asked parents to share their skills with the students, Eddings taught her son and his classmates coding. Before she went on to found Codewithsharen, LLC. In 2017, she began serving as the lead instructor for “Coding and Cupcakes with Kindergartners,” hosted at Detroit elementary schools.
Also featuring treats for the students, “Coding and Cupcakes with Kindergartners” is one of the scheduled events during Loving Academy’s Spring Festival. Games, STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) learning stations, education and community resources, food and much more are all part of the program.
