Critic's corner "The Intern"

the intern hero
Obtaining an internship at the ideal job can be exciting! However, taking an internship after retirement can be difficult. The American comedy film The Intern directed by Nancy Meyers starring Robert De Niro (Ben Whitaker) and Anne Hathaway (Jules Ostin) captures the essence of young adult versus the older mature adult perspective.
Jules Ostin, founder and CEO of About the fit, an on-line fashion company is being pressured into to hiring a CEO for her fast-growing company. Jules’ husband Matt (Anders Holm) who is a stay-at-home dad likes the idea of hiring a CEO if it means spending more time with him and their daughter.
Ben Whitaker, a 70-year-old widower applies to a senior citizen intern program for the on-line fashion company. Jules was apprehensive about the senior citizen internship program at first, however, Ben becomes quite popular around the office and wins Jules over with dedication and a likeable personality. Outside of being a father figure to the young men in the office, Ben is also very instrumental in letting Jules know she is capable of running her company on her own. He also finds a love interest, the in house massage therapist at the office, Fiona (Rene Russo).
I have one issue with this movie however; it painted the over-used stereotypical portrait of a successful woman. Jules wasn’t home much due to her busy schedule, which “caused” her husband to cheat. This cheapened the movie because the writer never explored this very important part of the story. The story would have been more intriguing if Ben, being a former executive at a phone book company, played a more influential part in providing Jules with the tools and advice she needed in order to successfully continue running her company as well as make time for her family.
Nevertheless, the film was quite enjoyable. I laughed out loud and cried too. The acting was outstanding. De Niro and Hathaway are two of my favorite actors. I give the movie 4 out of 5 stars.
The film is rated PG-13.
