Over the years we have seen prayer walks, but nothing as far reaching and impactful as those hosted recently by the First Ladies of several prominent churches and the Office of Wayne County Executive Warren Evans.
The Inaugural Wayne County Prayer Walk generated participation from more than 15 churches from across Wayne County. It was the first in a series of events being planned by the First Ladies and the County Executive’s office.
“This is a historic process that we find ourselves in as first ladies. The inaugural First Ladies of Wayne County Prayer Walk was a tremendous success with churches all over Wayne County walking. Wayne County Executive Warren Evans is to be congratulated on his insight of pulling us together,” said First Lady Eunice Peek of New Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.
Some of the participating congregations included: Detroit’s Greater Grace Temple, Triumph Church and Second Ebenezer Church, New Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Garden City’s Christian Faith Ministries, Ecorse’s International Gospel Center and Inkster’s New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.
Dedicated to taking prayer the streets, participants recited prayers centered on four topics: ending violence, nurturing and developing children, strengthening relationships in families and communities and strength for local leaders.
“Taking prayer out of the inside of the church to the streets of Detroit is ministry beyond the walls and paramount to taking our streets back. The power of prayer is undeniably one of the most powerful spiritual weapons that we have as Christians and if we want to see major changes take place in our communities like a decrease in violence, and restoration of relationships, we must be vigilant as well as strategic in prayer,” said First Lady Crisette Ellis of Greater Grace Temple in Detroit.
Well aware of the role that first ladies play in their congregations and communities as a whole, County Executive Evans assembled this group with the intention of focusing on women’s issues in Wayne County.
“First Ladies have a unique perspective of community needs because of the special role they have in their respective churches,” said Evans. “My administration is committed to working with the First Ladies of Wayne County to initiate ways to positively impact the lives of women and their families in the County. “
