Council President Pro Tem Mary Sheffield wants to put a stop to illegal tax foreclosure in the City of Detroit. Sheffield, along with The Coalition to End Unconstitutional Tax Foreclosures, will hold a town-hall meeting on Thursday, February 27, at 6 PM. The town-hall will take place at Bethel A.M.E Church in the District 5 community.
In 2018, Pro Tem Sheffield introduced “The People’s Bills” aimed at tackling high priority concerns in Detroit. In these set of bills, the Poverty Tax Exemption Ordinance was introduced to address Detroit residents’ access to the City’s Homeowners Property Tax Assistance Program (HPTAP). The bill passed through the Michigan Government.
Over the past several years, Detroit homeowners have been overtaxed for $600 million. Out of over 63,000 homeowners, 90% were overtaxed by an average of at least $3,700—between 2010 and 2016.
“Homeownership is the foundation to personal wealth and the bedrock for municipalities’ budgets,” said Pro Tem Sheffield. “The unconstitutional over-assessment of properties in Detroit has caused irreparable harm to Detroiters and our chartered City. Thus, it is imperative that we do everything in our power to make the individuals and families affected whole.”
Mary Sheffield serves in the District 5 section in Detroit. District 5 houses neighborhoods such as Midtown, Downtown, Brush Park, Indian Village, Boston Edison, West Village, New Center, the North End, and Arden Park.
