This summer, DCAD and the NKFM are encouraging individuals with diabetes to concentrate on eating healthy. Summer is a time to enjoy family, friends, and life. It’s also a great time to refocus on feeling better, eating healthy foods, and controlling your diabetes. Here are a few tips on how to eat healthy at potlucks and barbecues but still enjoy the many foods summer has to offer:
Focus on filling your plate with vegetables and whole grains.
Meat dishes can be included but should be limited. Stick with lean meats such as poultry or fish.
Watch out for fatty foods! Limit dishes with a lot of mayonnaise, sour cream, and butter.
Try to drink water, unsweetened tea, or diet soda with your meal.
Try fruit for dessert! An occasional small slice of pie or cookie is ok if you can work it into your meal plan.
All Detroit residents are welcome to participate in helping eliminate diabetes-related health disparities in African American adults by attending the monthly DCAD meeting. DCAD strives to promote health equity in Detroit through policy-making, environmental changes, community awareness, and action by developing resources through strategic collaboration. DCAD’s vision for the future is Health, Equity, Access, Learning, and Empowerment in Detroit (HEALED).
