Leaders and community members in Detroit will gather for a series of events surrounding the 2020 Census. The “Census Social Hour” will take place at top Detroit restaurants in the Downtown area, and light refreshments will be served at each location. Below are listed times and dates for each event:
February 24: Lelia (1249 Griswold St, Detroit, MI 48226) 5:30-7 PM
February 26: Ivy Kitchen and Cocktails (9215 E Jefferson Ave, Detroit, MI 48214) 5:30-7 PM
March 4: The Block (3919 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48201) 5:30-7 PM
Here are some important dates to look out for regarding the 2020 Census:
- March 12 – 20: Households will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail.
- March 30 – April 1:The Census Bureau will count people who are experiencing homelessness over these three days. As part of this process, the Census Bureau counts people in shelters, at soup kitchens and mobile food vans, on the streets, and at non-sheltered, outdoor locations such as tent encampments.
- April 1:Census Day is observed nationwide. By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond to your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. When you respond to the census, you’ll tell the Census Bureau where you live as of April 1, 2020.
Recently, Detroit was recognized as one of the country’s most hard-to-count cities. Issues such as vacant homes, lack of communication, and poverty-stricken neighborhoods play a role in gathering an accurate account for Detroit citizens. To RSVP, please email malilee@detroitmi.gov.
