Collegiate debate returns to Detroit, sponsored by UAW-Ford

UAW-Ford will host “Debate in the D,” a collegiate debate on Fri., April 27, at Detroit Preparatory High School at Northwestern, 2200 W. Grand Blvd. in Detroit beginning at 10:30 a.m. Student teams from Morehouse College, Spelman College, Central Michigan University and University of Michigan-Flint will participate in a two-round duel.

The student audience will enjoy an interactive learning experience, as Debate in the D follows the collegiate parliamentary debate format with emphasis on persuasiveness, logic, and wit.

Each team will be represented by two debaters, one team debating the affirmative and the other debating the opposition. Each exhibition will consist of four constructive speeches and two rebuttal speeches, resulting in the winning team earning the grand-prize trophy.

This is the second consecutive year UAW-Ford has hosted the Debate in the D exhibition, it is part of the organization’s commitment to conduct community service initiatives nationwide.

“UAW-Ford is proud to sponsor the second Debate in the D, which will expose youth to the art of constructive debate, teaching both conflict resolution and effective communication,” said Jimmy Settles, UAW-Ford vice president. “This event is just another way in which UAW-Ford uplifts the communities in which our members live and work.”

“Ford is known for building great products around the world, but we also believe it’s important to be a good corporate citizen,” said Bill Dirksen, vice president, labor affairs, Ford Motor Company. “Supporting the youth in our communities is just one way to help out..”

Renowned performance artist Mike Ellison will emcee the event, as the Martin Luther King Jr., Senior High School drumline and celebrity disc jockey DJ Invisible excites the crowd. Debaters will verbally spar before an audience of more than 500 local students.

UAW-Ford conducts community service year-round through charitable donations to local schools and organizations in support of the arts, youth, veterans and the elderly, as well as helping people in need nationwide.
