DTE Energy Foundation and American Red Cross will be equipping citizens of Detroit with fire safety by installing 1,000 smoke detectors.
Another 5,000 smoke detectors will be installed in homes across various cities in the state. The outreach is a part of the American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign.
The first house to receive a smoke detector is located on Melbourn Street. The site will also be used for the fire safety and planning in case of a house fire demonstration.
According to the American Red Cross, statistics indicate approximately 95 percent of Detroit fires are caused by arson. This alarming fact is 50 times the national average. There is reported an average of 30 fires a night in Detroit.
DTE Energy employee volunteers will provide fire safety education and home energy consultations to homeowners throughout the installation process, and continuing through June 2016.
Through the work of DTE and the American Red Cross, nearly 1,200 Michigan families will receive the necessary tools and education to keep both their families and communities safe in case of fire.
